The wildebeest migration often had false starts and stops but, when it does occur, first the herd becomes excited and the scattered wildebeests starting gathering and running towards the river.
The river crossing is always filled with danger - the wildebeests could tire before reaching the other side, get trampled by the rush of animals or get caught by one of the enormous crocodiles that patrol up and down the river, waiting for these crossings. It takes a very brave one to take the first plunge.
