This image of two Alaskan Brown Bears taken by Robert has been awarded a Highly Honored image in this year's Windland Smith Rice International Awards http://www.naturesbestphotography.com/competition_overview.php! The photograph appears in the Fall/Winter 2011 issue of Nature's Best Photography in the Zoos & Aquariums category.
Out of more than 21,000 images, approximately 500 photos made it into the semi-final round of judging (Robert had three that were semi-finalists) and the 133 Highly Honored images are published in the Fall/Winter issue.
The photograph was taken at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, MT an AZA Accredited Not-for-Profit Wildlife Park and Educational Facility.
The bear’s names are Illie and Sam. They were rescued as orphans in 1996 near King Salmon, AK. Sam weighs about 1,000 lbs, and Illie 750lbs.
Written permission has been granted to market the images.
After a Winter trip into Yellowstone National Park, we visited the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone, MT. Because of a connection with wildlife programs, we were given a complementary personal tour of the facility. We had a few minutes to photograph in near zero degree temperatures while two twin Alaskan brown bear siblings played in the snow. Robert took the opportunity to capture a few hand-held images with a Canon 100-400mm IS zoom. In one photo Illie is biting on Sam’s ear in a playful gesture.
Robert is an avid supporter of Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Education. At the end of the tour of this impressive facility, he was happy to make a financial donation to support their mission. Later, he sent them a CD of the images from this shoot, granting them permission to use the images in their fund-raising, educational and other projects. It is very meaningful to him to support the Center both with a financial donation and the use of his photographs. After receiving the CD, Erika Kuc, the Development Manager/Animal Keeper replied. The photographs are beautiful! …We will definitely be able to use these for adoptions, etc. Thank you so much!!!

Info on a new book featuring Robert's Images:
This book is a collaboration of perfect strangers. When Julia Fairchild wanted to write a book about animals for her newborn granddaughter, she started looking online for nice photographs. Every one that she liked the best were taken by the same photographer, Robert Winslow. With his permission, Julia chose the pictures, and with the help of Wikipedia, chose all the most interesting facts she could find, to create a book about the lovely creatures who grace our world.
This book is written with all the love in the world for all the children of the world.
